7-Night / 8-Day Itinerary

You steered to: Home » Cruising Adventures » 7-night Perfect Sail or Trawler Cruise

Not intended for navigation. Routes and distances are approximate and are determined by each skipper based on conditions and preferences.

The perfect itinerary for those traveling in a sailboat or trawler-style yacht as well as anyone wanting to avoid long days at the helm.

This cruising itinerary allows for exploration and relaxation at a slower pace. You’ll be on ‘island time’ as you navigate through the San Juan Islands and briefly dip into Canada’s Gulf Islands to discover scenic coves, historic ports of call, and narrow passageways.

For those wanting to explore more, check out our 14-Night Leisurely Sail or Trawler Cruise itinerary.

7-Night / 8-Day Itinerary

Day 1 | Spencer Spit

Cruising miles: 13

After leaving Anacortes, go West to Lopez Island. Off the northeast corner of this island lies Frost Island, which creates a beautiful oasis for Spencer Spit Marine State Park. Spencer Spit is basically a sandbar jutting out from Lopez Island, much like an arrow pointing at tiny Frost Island. This is the perfect spot for a swim, a picnic, or just a meandering hike along the beach.

Day 2 | Friday Harbor

Cruising miles: 12

Leaving Spencer Spit to the north, another short jaunt to the west brings you into Upright Channel. Quickly you’ll find Turn Island in front of you, indicating that you’re approaching the charming seaside town of Friday Harbor (on San Juan Island). Friday Harbor is the seat of the Island County government and is the most populous of the island towns. Don’t let that fool you though – this enchanting town is intimate and inviting. You’ll find wonderful shopping, dining and hiking here – along with simpler joys such as sitting on a dockside bench to read, watch birds or simply relax. Plan to spend at least a few hours here (if not longer) to truly take in all the sights.

Day 3 | Bedwell Harbor

Cruising miles: 16

When you’re ready to travel across the international border, Bedwell Harbor is the natural choice for your customs stop. Much more than a government post, though, Bedwell is a blossoming small marina with fantastic facilities. Located on the southwest side of South Pender Island, Bedwell boasts the newly developed Poet’s Cove Resort hotel/condo property with a world class restaurant, spa and hotel.

Day 4 | Sidney Spit Marine Park

Cruising miles: 12

Heading southwest out of Bedwell, toward Victoria, you’ll find Sidney Island. The Sidney Spit Marine Park has more than 30 moorage buoys, wonderful hiking along a sandy beach and a wonderful selection of native trees and wildlife. You’ll enjoy your peaceful view of the busy Sidney Channel in a location which feels like a world away.

Day 5 | Reid Harbor via Roche Harbor

Cruising miles: 15

Venturing back into the USA, Roche Harbor will again be the most appropriate place to clear Customs. Tucked in the northwest corner of San Juan Island, behind Henry Island, Roche Harbor is another wonderful small seaside town with a unique personality. You’ll find ample services, dining, shopping and activities here (and this is a great place to pick up any provisions you’ve run low on).

Day 6 | Cascade Bay – Rosario Resort

Cruising miles: 16

Located on Orcas Island, Cascade Bay is home to one of the jewels of the islands – the historic Rosario Resort. The original mansion here was built in 1904 by a millionaire Seattle shipbuilder (Robert Moran). Anchored on bedrock, the property took six years to complete, and boasts more than fifty rooms. The architecture includes concrete walls, shipwright style doors and woodwork and inch-thick plate glass windows. Far from seeming like a cold ship, however, this is a warm, world-class resort.

Cruising miles: 16

Eventually, you’ll need to return to Fidalgo Island, but you’ll have time for a leisurely return while you begin working on next year’s itinerary. We look forward to seeing you next time.
