7-day Power or Sail Class

Get extended personal coaching when an instructor joins your 7-day charter to coach and guide you during your journey.

This premium option is ideal if you:

Would like to skipper the boat yourself, but have an onboard coach, backup skipper, or extra pair of hands to assist

Want to receive American Boating or American Sailing certification in a private setting

Would like advanced instruction tailored to your specific skills and vessel

Want to take full advantage of local knowledge

Prefer boating instruction during the peak summer months

Want to combine instruction with a full charter during one week-long (or more) trip to the Pacific Northwest.

“John was an awesome trainer. He was great at training and was fun to be with. Nice guy!”

M. CairnsGrand Marnier, Golden Star 42

This instructed cruise is a hybrid charter that combines the freedom of a bareboat charter, the support of a crewed charter, and the skill-building of a private boating class.

Like a bareboat charter, you are in command – and you enjoy a complete hands-on experience while getting the satisfaction and accomplishment of skippering a charter yacht through the San Juan Islands and beyond.

Like a fully crewed charter, you can rely on the expertise of an experienced skipper onboard to provide hands-on instruction tailored for you and the vessel, as well as provide local knowledge of the cruising area and conditions.

Like a private boating class, a qualified instructor will join your charter as you cruise into the beautiful San Juan Islands and you have the option to receive an American Boating or American Sailing certification.*

During your 7-day Power or Sail Class you will receive advanced private training and practice time to improve your skills in key areas like:

  • Close-quarter maneuvering
  • Docking and anchoring
  • Navigation and electronics
  • Chart reading and route planning
  • Tides and currents
  • Vessel orientation and operation
  • Radio communication
  • Emergency procedures
  • Boating safety

The 7-day Power or Sail Class fee is $450 per day in addition to the applicable charter fee for your selected vessel and season, plus room and board for the instructor. For a 7-day charter this is less than the cost of two people in a scheduled boating class.

Note: If you choose for the instructor to depart the charter before the scheduled conclusion, no credit will be given. If this departure occurs before the vessel returns to Anacortes you must disembark the instructor at a port in the San Juan Islands with ferry service to Anacortes or be assessed additional transportation costs.

*To pursue certification, no additional class fees are required but you must: (1) notify AYC at least 60-days prior to the charter, (2) purchase the required course materials, (3) satisfy all course requirements, and (4) pay any required membership and certification fees. Course descriptions, required material, and certification fees can be found on our Powerboating Classes page and Sailing Classes page.
